2012 February Meeting Invitation
Written by Administrator
Good Evening, Sweetwater Camera Club members, renewing members, visitors and friends,

YOU ARE INVITED to the February Sweetwater Camera Club meeting:
This Thursday evening, February 9th is the Sweetwater Camera Club’s second monthly meeting of 2012 at our new meeting location, the Hunter Park Community Center. The address is 8830 Gurley Road, Douglasville GA 30134. See map attached. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Our speaker this month is Rob Hainer, the vice president of the Sweetwater Camera Club and our 2011 photographer of the year. Rob’s topics for his lecture include an introduction to the Sweetwater Camera Club’s new Flickr digital photo site and his adventures in making money on the Internet with Micro Stock Photography.
As a group, the Sweetwater Camera Club is evolving towards a larger presence on-line. Rob’s presentation will include information and instructions as to how we will be submitting work through the Flickr site, to be discussed among our members. This will eventually lead us to having on-line contests and a continuous learning experience that transcends the current limits of our meetings. Please come find out what this is all about.

In part 2 of Rob’s lecture, he will be showing some of his pictures which he has been selling through such stock agencies as ShutterStock and iStockPhoto. There are many benefits to making sales (such as supporting your photo habit). Those who would buy your photos are quite particular about the quality of your work and encourage you to continuously polish your art and craftsmanship. Photo buyers provide a built-in feedback mechanism to accelerate your photographic learning.

In Memoriam: Sadly, we learned today that one of our Digital Image Group members, Marci Raneri, passed away on May 24th, 2011 at the age of 55. I am attaching a PDF slide show of some of her work which I made using Irfanview. Marci was a fine art nature photographer as you will see. She sold a number of her greeting cards, framed works and posters at several outdoor shows here and at festivals on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She was active in DIG for the first 7 months of 2010 but suddenly left us and moved to Wilmington N.C. Before she left, she gave me her outdoor display booth and racks and asked to remain on our mailing lists. Evidently she suffered a terminal illness and spent the last few months of her life in a nursing home in Wilmingtonpdf-wht

For those of you who missed Jan and Erik Peterson’s DSLR Workshop last Sunday at the Douglas County Library, I am attaching another Irfanview PDF slideshow. As you will see, we had 27 people in attendance last Sunday, January 29th. This has to be one of the BEST things that this club has had the good fortune to present and attend. Erik says that he plans to give this workshop again in the next few months, perhaps as often as once a quarter to accommodate those who weren’t able to attend this time. If you missed this workshop, please don’t miss the next one. Everyone who attended came away better-educated and more highly motivated. The color handouts Jan and Erik provided for this presentation are amazing! pdf-wht

Our agenda for February’s meeting is as follows:

A.    6:30 to 7 p.m. – monthly contest entries taken and payment of yearly membership fees. If you haven’t joined or paid your dues, see our secretary Jeannie McKnight or her assistant Carri Layhue. You may also join online by going to www.sweetwatercameraclub.org/membership
B.    7 p.m. - Brief announcements and Introduction of visitors
C.    Presentation by V.P. Rob Hainer – Using the Sweetwater Camera Club Flickr site; Micro-Stock Photography
D.    Social break with refreshments – 10 to 15 minutes
E.    Brief business meeting with any announcements not made at the beginning of the meeting. If you need to make an announcement to the group, this is the time to do it.
F.    Photo Contest Critique: The contest is “Architecture” This includes a color print category, a monochrome print category and a field trip category. The field trip this month was Saturday, February 4th to Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield. We had at least 9 people show up for what turned out to be a very nice day. This month, the critique will be conducted by the audience. From time to time we find out how well our members are learning their photographic lessons by asking for comments from those in attendance. This has proven itself to be as valuable a learning experience as having one person provide the commentary.
G.    Judging of Contest Entries:  A 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded for each category. As many as 2 honorable mentions might be given for each category but those will not be awarded points towards the 2012 Photographer of the Year declaration. Several honorable mention photos do get published on Chapel Hill News & Views contest pages from time to time.

Field Trip for February: 2012: We are awaiting further information from FlightSafety International as to when we can take our field trip to the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport. As soon as this information becomes available it will be announced. Unlike other field trips, you must be a member of the SCC to attend this event. We will be invited inside the commercial flight simulator training area. The flight instructor will show us simulators for all currently flown U.S. commercial aircraft—Those in attendance will be screened by TSA.

Upcoming Workshops:
Erik Peterson has provided an outline for our next workshop, which will take place as soon as we poll this Thursday’s audience. This workshop is entitled “Processing RAW Images – An Introduction to Camera RAW.” These topics will be covered:
  •  Processing RAW images.
  • Discussions concerning RAW vs. JPEG image capture
  • Adobe Camera Raw / Lightroom / Aperture (if someone has it).
  •  Using Camera Profiles
  • Description of tools in Camera RAW
  • Cropping and Straightening
  • White Balance Tool
  • Spot removal
  • Adjustment Brush
  • Addition of Gradients
  • White Balance manual and auto adjustments
  • Levels control
  • Global Saturation vs. Vibrance controls
  • Contrast using sliders and curves
  • Sharpening
  • Noise Filtering
  • Saturation / Hue / Luminance adjustments
  • Split Toning
  • Grain
  • Vignetting
  • Chromatic Aberration Correction
  • Presets
  • Applying profile from one RAW file to other RAW files or processing multiple images at one time.
  • Kelby 7-step ACR processing (complete image processing without using Photoshop).
As you can see, this will be a technical examination of the steps involved in successful RAW image processing. For you “artiste’s with a camera,” please don’t be intimidated by the analytical nature of this subject. Great visual art requires a strong understanding of technical factors as well as creative sensibilities. Michelangelo didn’t paint the frescoes on the ceiling and alter of the Sistine Chapel without knowing how to use his tools and mix his paint and plaster correctly.  ‘Nuff said.
Please come to our meeting Thursday evening, and make plans to attend our field trips and workshops. All of our efforts are designed to empower you as an image maker.

Richard
